Second Chance Companions Of Perry County™
This program was established by the Perry County Humane Society and is designed to improve adoption rates and retention of rescued dogs by providing adoptive families with well-trained animals using a correctional facility based training program.
This program assigns a prison inmate that has passed the strict criteria to become involved in the program to a dog. The dogs in this program are allowed to stay with the inmates, creating a social environment for the animals similar to the companionship the dogs will experience in a family. This is important because dogs isolated in kennels will become un-socialized in a matter of weeks.
While an inmate is training the dog, the Perry County Human Society provides food, training support, and some veterinary care. Volunteer veterinarians and students from OSU visit the dogs in the correctional facility once a month. The Perry County Humane Society then arranges adoptions for the dogs.
